Good Bye, Boy

As I type my eyes are tearing up.  I've never had to say good-bye to a pet before.  I'm a huge dog lover.  I traet my dogs like a member of the family.  We got Joey and Sadie from a friend of mine (Krista Hunter, remember her, girls?) when I was a sophemore in high school.  That was in 1996.

The past year he developed arthritis in his hips.  But the past week he worsened.  He didn't move from the same spot in my parent's backyard for nearly 2 days.  He stopped eating in that time as well.

My heart ached seeing him like that today.  Derek and I went over to my parents to say good-bye.  It's difficult explaining to a 3-year old why we need to say good-bye to one of his favorite dogs.  I explained that Joey was sick and was going to heaven soon.  I cried when I said good-bye and Derek came over and hugged my leg.  He was really upset, too.

My dad came home early from work, and he and mom took Joey to the vet.  She text me saying they were putting him down.  Mom couldn't watch and left the room.  Dad said he was gone within a minute and went so peacefully.

Derek hasn't stopped asking "why the angels won't help Joey so he doesn't die?"

Heart breaking.

I wanted to include some pictures of Joey from his better days, but they are all on my other computer.

I hope his sister, Sadie, can adjust to her brother being gone.

We'll miss you Joey.

O how sad :( That is seriously the hardest thing to do, especially when they have been a part of your family for so many years! I am sorry for your family's loss :( Poor Derek, having to deal with death for the first time. SO SAD!

Oh your poor family! And poor Sadie! I hope she adjusts ok without Joey around. It was really sad for my parent's labs when Sally died and Tucker was just so lonely without her.

That is really hard to explain to Derek too. Thinking of you and your family tonight. xoxo

Oh Kelly, I am so sorry. When we had to put ol Tucker down, it was so hard. He is chasing balls up there in doggy heaven with his pals.

That is really sad. That is a LONG time to have a pet. I watched Marley and Me a few months ago. All I could think about is how my kids would react to my dog dying. They've never had a close personal experience with death, as I' sure Derek hasn't. I can't imagine how hard that is. I'm sorry you're going through it.

Oh Kelly, I'm so sorry. That is so sad. That must be so hard to have had a pet for that long to watch go, at least he had a nice and long life. All the pets I ever had only lasted a few years before they disappeared (cats), and that was always hard. I can't imagine having a pet for 14 years and seeing him go. Thinking of you.

I wanted to cry when I read this post. I remember when you guys first got them! They were such darling pups! Poor Sadie. I Hope she adjusts to it well. And I'm so sorry for yours and your families loss. That has got to be hard.
