Unfit Mother

I almost forgot about this. At least I'm trying to forget about it.

This is HORRIBLE. I am an UNFIT MOTHER.

As I was packing up the car for Big Bear Friday morning, I had James and Jillian sitting in the stroller in the garage. I didn't know what else to do with them, so I put them each in their own stroller, buckled them in, gave them a toy and LOCKED the brake on each stroller.

They were in the garage. The Suburban was in the driveway.

I went in the house to get something and was gone a few minutes. I know I shouldn't have left them alone. Or alone with Derek, for that matter. I should have closed the garage door.

I came out to see James' stroller gone. I ran down the driveway only to see a woman pushing James to my house saying, "Is this your baby?"

OMG! That is right... holy freaking cow!

James had strolled down the street! This lady was out walking and caught him before the stroller hit a parked car. I was mortified and so scared. I just started crying.

I thanked her over and over and tried to explain myself, but there was no explaining. She looked at me as if I was a terrible mother. She didn't know I also have another 8 month old and 3 year year old. Who is she to judge, I thought. But I would probably act the same way if I was out walking and saw a baby strolling down the street alone.

As I came in screaming for Jason, Derek comes out of the bathroom he was apparently hiding in and said, "I'm sorry I did that to James, mom".

What the hell? (Excuse my french, please!)

Yes, Derek had unlocked the brake and tried to take James on a walk. The stroller must have got away from him, he got scared and ran inside.

My heart still pounds when I think about this story. What would have happened if that woman wasn't out. We live on a very LONG street and cars go fast. Or someone could have taken him. I can only imagine all the possibilities.

James didn't even know anything was wrong. He was so happy.

I still cry when I think about it.

Lesson learned.

About a year ago I was at my grandparents house and my mom was in the backyard "watching" Olivia. She realized she was missing and found her in the middle of the street. I think about that and it sends shivers up my spine...the what ifs! It happens to all of us!

I agree with Traci...these things happen to all of us. It is scarry though. Glad everything turned out alright.

Don't feel so bad Kelly,
One time I was loading the kids back in the car at Target. I parked the cart up against my car, and started to buckle in Hannah first (since she has a tendency to run in parking lots lately), and suddenly a woman tapped me on the shoulder asking me if this was my baby slowly strolling away from me in the middle of the parking lot! What's a mom to do? Put the baby in first, and the toddler runs away...put the toddler in first, and the baby strolls away. We can't win.

Glad James was okay. Don't beat yourself up. We've all been there, just not everyone will admit it.

Oh Kelly! How scary! God put that lady in that spot for a reason on that morning!!!
It's a wonder any of our kids survived, as we have all been there!

Everyone is right it happens to the best of us. One day Brian and I were taking the girls for a walk. I was inside getting a few things and Brian was getting the girls into the stroller. He put Emmy in the stroller and realized he left something in the garage. So he locked the stroller and ran to the garage with Jenna standing by the stroller. Somehow she managed to pull the stroller over in just a few seconds with Emmy inside. Poor Emmy had a huge bump on her head but was okay. We learned our lesson the hard way too. You are not an unfit mother. James doesn't even know what happened. It is a good teaching moment for Derek.

I am so sorry. Luckily nothing happened. Poor Derek was just trying to be big.
