Labor Day & My Red Velvet Cake

This weekend was a lot of fun. On Sunday we went to Jason's sister's in Lake Elsinore for a BBQ and some swimming. I love when Derek gets to play with his cousin Aiden. They are a riot to watch. I only took one picture, but it's a cute one of Derek and Aiden walking to the pool with Jason. Except I cut off Jason's head... sorry sweetie.

Then Sara flew in this morning to stay most of the week, so we picked her up at Ontario Airport. My mom thought it would be fun to take Derek to eat at the cafe at the Corona Airport since he's so into airplanes when his aunt is around. I had never been there and it was great! First off, the food is delicious and completely homemade... even the jam. Very yummy and very inexpensive. While we were waiting for our breakfast to come, I took Derek to look at all the planes. It's pretty awesome that you're allowed to just walk around and look at the planes and even watch them take off and land. Derek was in heaven. I only wish I had my camera. We will definitely be back there with Jason and my dad.

After dinner tonight we went on a walk up Skyline. Derek is all about hiking now, it's so cute. He really thinks he's hot stuff walking up the mountain by himself. Ever since he and my dad saw the bear in Mammoth, he's on a bear hunt. None up here in Skyline tonight.

Making sure everyone is keeping up with him

Now for the cake part.... I had a made a red velvet cake (that I had been craving for days) for dessert tonight. It all looked great until I started frosting it and it just started sinking in and melting. Then I didn't have enough cream cheese frosting so I had to use chocolate too. This cake was so pitiful I had to take a picture. Mainly for Kristi (Genny's mom) since she is the master cake artist. Do you think I need some tips??

These are some of our plates after eating the cake. The one that is gone is mine. The other two that are just picked at are my moms and Jason's. Everyone said it tasted weird. How mean! Personally, I thought it was quite delicious! They say because I'm pregnant, I must like gross things. I think I believe them because 4 out of 5 people didn't like it. WHATEVER! Happy Labor Day to you!

You can always count on there to be cake at the Enlow's... I love it! I have an amazing red velvet recipe from Magnolias in NYC! I'll email it to ya! It is with buttercream frosting though.

Kelly,
I think your cake is beautiful! Hey, I never met a cookie I didn't like, nor a piece of cake. I am sure that those who said it tasted weird, were off their rockers! Looked good to me!!!

Glad you had a good weekend. Sorry the fam didn't love your cake too. I am not a huge cake fan myself, but if you made guacamole, I might have been calling to see if there was some leftover!

I'm so glad Sara and Jamie started blogs. Sara is so cute in her uniform. I forgot to tell her that. I will have to post it on her blog.

I always have grand ideas of making beautiful things I see in magazines or recipe books but somehow, it never turns out the same. At least it tasted good to you...you're the one who was craving it. (I'm sure I would have liked it too!)

I think that cake story is hilarious.

That cafe sounds like a great place to take kiddos.

You crack me up about the cake thing. I can not remember the last time I made a cake and I do not even know what a red velvet one is.
Love that Derek loves to hike. Totally part of your fam then, and glad you did not see any bears.
Glad you had a good labor day and glad that I got to see you the other day too. How fun!
