Here is the poor defenseless little boy:
(Yes, he is eating rice off my parents floor, yesterday... and he is happy!)
Do you see where I am going with this?
It's 5:00 pm.
The kids and I are upstairs in the bonus room.
The doorbell rings.
I go to answer the door.
It's some neighbor and her kids collecting canned goods for a food drive.
I don't know that Derek has tried to climb over the gate that has the babies locked in the bonus room.
As he did this the gate was knocked down.
James sees his escape.
And goes for it... down the hall towards the stairs.
He falls down 7 steps.
I don't even know this is happening yet.
I hear nothing amongst my talking with this lady at the door.
I give her a few cans and shut the door.
I look up to see James tumble down the last step.
And then crying.
It actually took me a minute to realize it was James because he and Derek wore the same shirt today.
I made a beeline up the stairs.
And just held him and started to cry myself.
He only cried a few minutes... I couldn't believe it.
I sent Derek to his room after a LOT of reprimanding for what he did.
James didn't have a bump, bruise or any evidence of the fall.
I'm shocked... and relieved.
Does Derek have a death sentence for his little brother?
Poor James.
He is going to be one tough guy.
Needless to say when my dad arrived he installed the gate at the top of the stairs for us.
We've had it for weeks and haven't installed it. I didn't think we needed it since whenever we are upstairs we're in the bonus room, which has a tension gate. Now I know that isn't good enough when I have a wild 3 year old around.

Oh geesh! That is my biggest fear owning a two story home!! I actually have nightmares about it. I'm so glad James was okay!! It's crazy how resilient babies are sometimes.
We shut both the girls doors at night when they go to bed, but I always think that I should lock the gate at the top of the stairs at night time too, just in case someone gets out of their room.
This also happened to a friend of mine a couple of weeks ago who has a son the same age...scary! That is why I am thankful for a one story! At least one of yours didn't climb off of your bed and roll onto the ground...that's what mine did a while back. I felt like a horrible mother, but it happens.
oh no amanda, that happened to me too! i was soo tired and fell asleep on the bed with jill andshe fell off! i awoke to her hitting the floor!
Poor second/third babies...they always get so beat up and their older siblings had life easy! Glad James is okay but you have sure had your fill of heart attacks this year!
Yikes!!! Daddy to the rescue!!!!
Madison has fallen off of my bed more times than I'd like anyone to know. Riley fell down our stairs once all the way to the marble. I hate stairs. So glad he was okay, and I be it feels so good to have that gate up now. Ours was broken for the longest time and Tim finally fixed it a few months ago, I sleep easy now!
Kelly- I put Griffin in the middle of the bed and took 3 steps to the dresser to get a shirt and he tried following me...never did that again! Now he is walking around whenever he can...
